Day 1 - Calgary:
Transfer from the airport to your hotel. Meet your guide for pre trip information and dinner in the hotel.
Day 2 - Banff National Park:
It is only a 1.5 hour drive to the firs Rock Mountain National Park. On a generously laid out campground (showers) in a pine forest you set up base camp for the next four nights. Today's hike in the front ranges of the mountains, is an easy warm-up and a chance to test the equipment and the condition of the participants. Your guide knows the best trails for the different seasons. Dinner by the camp fire. Walking time 2 – 3 hours.
Day 3 - Banff National Park:
Breakfast on the campground. Everybody packs lunch, water, spare socks and camera. Summit number one is a moderate to demanding 4 km (2,5 mi) round trip with 730 m (2431 ft) gain to 2408 m (8018 ft) elevation and a superb view of the broad valley below and the mountain ranges beyond. Walking time 3 - 4 hours.
Day 4 - Banff National Park:
A forest path through Engelman Spruce and Alpine Fir ends in a vast wildflower meadow for wandering and exploring with rewarding views in every direction. A round trip of 18 km (11.3 mi) with 655 m (2150 ft) gain, the highest point at 2330 m (7560 ft). How about rewarding yourself afterward with a relaxing soak in the pool of the Banff Hot Springs. Walking time up to 7 hours.
Day 5 - Banff National Park:
It is a long day to today’s highpoint. The first 5 km (3 mi) to the shores of a bright blue mountain lake are fairly easy, the spot a perfect place to spend the afternoon. It is only another 3 km scramble and 295 m gain on a scree slope to the summit above 3000 m (9990 ft). All in all a 17 km (10.6 miles) round trip with 1113 m (3706 ft) gain, walking time 5 - 7 hours.
Jour 6 - National Park:
On the drive into the British Columbia side of the Rockies you visit famous Lake Louise. A short but steep hike leads to the 2745 m (9141 ft) summit of Mount Fairview with grandiose views and glacier covered giants nearby. 5 km with 1015 m (3380 ft) gain. Camp (showers) is established for the next three nights in Yoho Park with famous sights like Takakkaw Falls and Emerald Lake. Walking time 4 - 5 hours.
Day 7 - National Park:
The Wapta Highline, Yoho Pass, Burgess Pass loop is a 19.2 km (12 mi) circuit to 2180 m (7260 ft) maximum elevation. You traverse alpine meadows with bird’s eye views of the Kicking Horse River valley and Emerald Lake. The peak of Mt. Burgess at 2599 m (8656 ft) is temptingly close. Gain of 880 m (2930 ft), walking time for the loop is 6 hours.
Day 8 - Yoho National Park:
How about rafting on the Kicking Horse River? This option allows you to rest your legs but adrenaline keeps your heart pumping as you and seven others paddle the raft through the white water. Of course you can also join the guide hiking the famous Iceline Trail. It is 6.5 km (4 mi) with 685 m (2280 ft) gain to Iceline Summit but don’t turn around, complete the loop and check out the edge of Emerald Glacier and three small rockbound lakes. Walking time 5 - 8 hours.
Day 9 - Icefields Parkway:
An early morning start for the drive north along the spectacular Icefields Parkway. Rarely do you have such rewards for so few difficulties. A creek crossing and some rock hopping is required during the 12.5 km (7.8 mi) round trip but the mountain solitude, glaciers, tarns and views make it all worthwhile. The summit is at 2870 m (9557 ft) summit with 950 m (3163 ft) gain. Camping along the Icefields Parkway. Walking time 6 hours.
Day 10 - Jasper National Park:
The road climbs steadily past picture book scenery like Peyto Lake, Saskatchewan Crossing, the Weeping Wall to the Columbia Icefields. You can drive right to the toe of the Athabasca Glacier and have a chance of walking on the surface of the ice. Spend time here or at the Icefields Interpretive Center or get a birds eye view from where Mount Wilcox, 2884 m (9603 ft) is looking across the valley to the icy giants guarding the vast glacier region. The trail starts already at tree line, it is 4 km (2.5 mi) with 325 m (1082 ft) gain up to the pass at 2360 m (7859 ft). On the campground (showers) near the small mountain town of Jasper you stay the following three nights. Walking time 3 hours.
Day 11 - Jasper National Park:
A 5 km (3 mi) hike and there it is: one of the finest views you will find in the area. From an abandoned fire lookout site at 2170 m (7226 ft), the greenish blue waters of Maligne Lake stretch towards the Narrows with glacier-clad 3000 m summits rising beyond. It is easy to work your way through the open meadows of this rolling ridge top, a carpet of flowers during the summer. The highest point reaches 2600 m (8658 ft). Elevation gain from 480 to 910 m (1958 to 3030 ft).
Walking time 4 – 7 hours.
Day 12 - Jasper National Park:
Planned for today is a side trip to Mount Robson, with 3954 m (13167 ft) highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, and an easy walk between huge cedar and hemlock trees to Kinney Lake or further up to White Falls. This massive mountain creates it’s own micro climate comparable to the climate of the mountains along the pacific coast. 9 km return to Kinney Lake, walking time 2 - 3 hours.
Day 13 - Edmonton:
A 8 km morning hike on the Sulphur Skyline at 2070 m (6893 ft) altitude with 700 m (2331 ft) elevation gain is a magnificent last peak experience to take home with you. If you already have enough photos, why not sit out this hike by the warm open air pool of the Miette Hot Springs. Your tour ends with arrival at your hotel in Edmonton, modern capital city of Alberta. Walking time 3 hours.
Day 14 - Edmonton:
Breakfast in the hotel and transfer to the Edmonton airport. |
