Upon arrival at the hotel on day one, you’ll find your personalized Globe-Trotter roadbook at the front desk. This very complete package of travelling literature includes: the relevant road maps, a copy of your detailed itinerary, some useful travelling tips, the vouchers, the relevant travelling guides, a 24h/7d toll free emergency number as well as a few surprises !
Day 1 – Anchorage
Pick up your rental car and drive to the B&B on the Park for check-in.
Day 2 – Anchorage / Talkeetna (180 km)
You depart from Anchorage and drive to the historic township of Talkeetna. En route, you may want to visit the musk-ox farm near Wasilla and the Iditarod headquarters, home of “The Last Great Sled Dog Race”. Also, the site of Eklutna with its Russian-orthodox church and an old Indian cemetery is well worth visiting.
Days 3 and 4 – Talkeetna / Denali National Park (195 km)
Talkeetna is the place to take a scenic flight to Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America. If the weather is nice you should definitely think about this! You then continue to Denali National Park where you’ll enjoy a scenic day trip. As you journey deep into the park you may see bear, moose, caribou, Dall sheep and a variety of other wildlife in their natural habitat.
Days 5 and 6 – Denali / Fairbanks (198 km)
You take the drive to Fairbanks, which is the second largest city in Alaska. You should visit the Fairbanks Museum and try gold-panning at the El Dorado Gold Mine! If you like, you can also take a trip to the hot springs at Chena Hot Springs.
Day 7– Fairbanks / Delta Junction - Tok (331 km)
In the morning you may wish to visit “North Pole”, home of Santa Claus. You then continue via Delta Junction to the small town of Tok.
Day 8 – Tok / Palmer (461 km)
You depart from Tok and continue to Palmer. Do not miss Matanuska Glacier, one of the few places where you can actually walk on a glacier.
Days 9 and 10 – Palmer/ Seward (271 km)
On your way to Seward you might want to visit Portage Glacier. Visit the Visitor Center and see the award-winning film “Voices from the Ice”. If you like, you can also take one of the boat excursions offered. You’ll then take a full-day boat trip that will take you to the fascinating Kenai fjords and glaciers National Park. It is also a great tour to watch wildlife: bald eagles, sea lions, sea otters and even whales can often be seen.
Days 11 and 12 – Seward / Homer (282 km)
Scenic drive to the little town of Homer. Along the way, there are several old Russian villages that are well worth visiting. Once in Homer, there is a variety of great boat trips that are offered. Homer is also the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World”!
Days 13 and 14 – Homer / Anchorage (367 km)
You may wish to visit the museum and to go shopping.
Day 15 – Anchorage
Return your car rental and flight back home.
